The Tale of Ritchie Sakthivel, 2022

Stop-motion animation

A stop-motion animation, consisting of over 1,000 pieces of hand-cut card, telling the life story of Ritchie Sakthivel MBA, and how he came to own Riverside Vegetaria, with the message ‘Love All, Serve All’.

Riverside Vegetaria is a vegetarian, independent restaurant in Kingston Upon Thames.

The project brief was to explore the notion of power within a specific community. During our discussions, Ritchie defined power as a negative concept, explaining that most people who have power abuse it. As Ritchie told me of his work for the surrounding community, such as providing schools with healthy meals at fairs and delivering meals to the elderly who were shielding during Covid, I suggested that he himself has power in the ability to do that for other people. He simply replied ‘My work for the community is not power, it is humanity.’
